The meditative magic of BLOCK PRINTING

Earlier this season, our designer Mieko Mintz traveled to
Jaipur, India—the heart of where much of her work begins.
While her pieces have long been crafted in this vibrant city, this visit was a particularly
intimate one. It was a chance to reconnect with the hands and heritage behind her collections and to witness—once again—the meditative magic of block printing. 

STEPPING INTO THE WORLD OF CRAFT

Block printing is not just a technique—it’s a tradition, a ritual, and an art form passed down over generations. In the bustling artisan neighborhoods of Jaipur, rows of wooden blocks—each carved with delicate floral andgeometric designs—line the walls.

It’s here, surrounded by dyes, textures, and decades of skill, that Mieko spent a day immersed in the process.

THE PROCESS, IN MOTION

From block carving to dye mixing, Mieko followed every step of the block printing journey. She watched artisans skillfully dip the carved wooden blocks into pigment and press them onto the fabric with perfect rhythm. With every print, the story of the cloth unfolded—one color, one tap, one moment at a time.

What struck her most was the patience and precision in each movement. Block printing is not just a job for these craftsmen—it’s a way of life, a devotion to beauty and detail that resonates deeply with Mieko’s own design philosophy.

During the visit, Mieko explored new colorways, experimented with motifs, and reconnected with the philosophy of handwork. For her, it wasn’t about overseeing production. It was about listening—to the hum of daily work, to the laughter between artisans, to the rhythm of print after print.

This journey will reflect in upcoming collections—not only through design, but through intention. The calm she felt watching the artisans work, the raw beauty of the textiles mid-process, the humanity in every detail—all of it will find its way into her creations.
