These unique cards are another step in the journey of Mieko’s carefully selected Kantha textiles from their creation (and in some cases ancient use) in India to her clothing pieces to cards to be shared with friends. Each card is like a visit to another distant world alive with vibrant life and color.
Pat loves to combine the many colors, textures, and patterns of Mieko’s Kantha scraps into small works of art. Looking closely at each card will show the thoughtful placement of shapes and stitching to create a miniature, one of kind “paintings.
The card images are mounted on thick, recycled paper that compliment the Kantha elements. Each card makes a wonderful treat for your friends, and may be easily matted and framed for use as small art pieces, thus extending the Kantha journey to another life.
KANTHA means simple stitching in Hindi. For more than 400 years, KANTHA quilts have been made in Bengal, India using many layers of old saris. Each is unique.
Hand Wash
Use a delicate care detergent in cold water without soaking, as this might release some dye. Press and wash without rubbing. Rinse the Kantha garment without wringing.
Machine Wash
Use a delicate care detergent in cold water, placing the Kantha garment in a mesh bag and washing it with a low-spin or delicate cycle. This will prevent snagging or twisting during the machine cycles.
Dry
Place the Kantha garment on a large, dry towel and roll it up to absorb excess moisture. Then lay the garment flat on a drying rack or hang it to air dry.
Hand Steamer / Iron
A hand steamer would be ideal, but if you are using an iron, avoid holding it directly against the garment and applying pressure. Keep the iron a few inches away from the garment and use only steam pressure.
